논문제목 Exceptional Cohesive Property of Sericin from Saturnia japonica for Robust Protective Cocoon

논문초록 Saturnia japonica (SJ) is a wild silkworm and a pest in eastern Asia constructing cocoons with specific features in contrast to the Bombyx mori (BM). To protect against its predators, knitting a robust protective cocoon is essential for SJ. Indeed, the SJ cocoon exhibits outstanding mechanical stability under external forces compared to the BM cocoon. Hence, a hardening component, sericin is extracted from the SJ cocoon, and the interaction forces between sericin layers are investigated using a surface forces apparatus (SFA) in various pH. The SJ sericin shows ~200% higher cohesive forces than BM sericin. Furthermore, the outermost pigments of SJ cocoon seem to contribute to even higher cohesive forces. The superior cohesive properties are possibly induced by the higher number of binding sites and/or synergistic interaction with pigments. Here, we demonstrate the superior cohesive property of SJ sericin and suggest it could be used for eco-friendly biomaterials or adhesive binders.
